The 13 June  is recognised as ‘National Sewing Machine Day'.  For your next Pub Quiz/Trivia question did you know that in 1829 Barthelemy Thimonnier introduced the first sewing machine to the world and what an invention it turned out to be too!   Saying that I am not the best with sewing, altering, needle threading etc – and this is why I have a lady (Karen) who alters any clothes I am needing alterations made to creating the perfect fit.

Karen’s Alterations, Milngavie 07793675780 – 5 star reviews

Another lady Helen Haston based in the Falkirk area on 07543268005.

Reasons why many of us need a seamstress/tailor in our lives

  • Clothes on the High Street are made based on averages, therefore, a size 12 jacket might fit a body shape in one area but not the other as we are all different shapes and sizes within our size range ie short legs, long legs, short arms, long arms, etc.

  • Having clothes fit us properly obviously makes them look better on us – creating a way to make us look slimmer, taller, younger, stylish.

  • We should wear our clothes – do not let the clothes wear us.    Proportion is key.
Some pointers to alterations which can have a huge impact on our clothes and how we are wearing them:

  • Sleeve length shortened
  • Sleeve removed
  • Sleeve added
  • Waistbands taken in/out
  • Seams taken in/out
  • Hems shortened
  • Adding adornments to garments to make a change
  • Bringing an item of clothing we truly love more up to date with a few alterations – in other words a bit of re-cycling
  • One of the few things which are not suitable for altering is knitwear – but everything else just do it!
The advice I always give to my clients when doing a wardrobe makeover is to use the philosophy ‘shop in the wardrobe first’ before hitting the shops and consider:

  • Is the item something you really do wish to keep?
  • Will you wear this if you pay money to have it altered?
  • If the item cost a reasonable amount of money then YES
  • If the item is something you only paid a small amount for is it worth the tailoring costs?
Hope this blog on National Sewing Machine Day has been helpful to you.

Stylish Wishes
